Learn How To Play … Aint No Love In The Heart of the City by Whitesnake

Learn the intro form this classic track, Aint No Love In The Heart of the City by Whitesnake:

We’re looking at the opening of Whitesnake’s “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” – starts with an open A string …

And then I want you to put your finger on fret 5 of that string …

And then slide up to fret 7 to create 3 distinctive notes: open, 5th fret and then slide without repacking to the 7th fret …

Brace your first fingernail across the 2 middle strings at fret 5 …

And play them D string G string – that order … We’ve got this …

Allow all the notes to ring together, you want to avoid this sort of sound …

Just be careful when you’re playing it, we want the notes to ring together …

Repack the G string, then go to the A string then slide the chord up by playing the note on the A string …

And create another note by sliding, like we did in the 1st instance, but this is 2 frets higher …

Then we’re going to brace our 1st finger nail across the 7th fret of the 2 middle strings …

That plays through and you should check the original recording to make sure you’re playing along properly, and then it comes to the point where that idea moves up forth – for more on intervals check out Guitar Practiced Perfectly software

But we’re going to play the same idea now, the only difference being the chord shape itself is out if you like by a fret. Before we were playing 3rd finger and the 1st finger was playing all the notes – now we need the 2nd finger a fret higher on the B string, so I’ve moved up a set of strings starting on the D …

But notice the shape now with my left hand needs to accommodate a note that looks higher …

Going to play the same pattern …

And move back to the original …

Learn How To Play … Shakin all Over Originally by Johnny Kidd

Learn the intro from this classic tune, Shakin all Over originally by Johnny Kidd:

It’s the 60s classic “Shakin’ All  Over”, it uses an E pentatonic scale – for more on pentatonic scales and scales in general check out Guitar Practiced Perfectly software

We’re starting on that top E string 3rd fret and pulling off to the open B …

Same on the B string …

Ok, we’re going to do the same type of thing now but on the next 2 strings the G and the D, but this time we’ll pull off from the 2nd fret on both strings to the open string in turn …

Ok, going to palm mute now …

And play that 2nd fret of the D string 4 times palm muted, twice open and then on the A string we’ll play that twice, and repeat, and on that final repeat go back to the D string fret 2 then just play that once, then hold down the 12th fret for the cord that leads in, the top 3 strings, all at fret 12 and play that chord through from the G string, 3rd string to 1

Learn How To Play … Jammin’ by Bob Marley

Learn how to play the intro to Jammin’ by Bob Marley:

We’re looking at the Bob Marley classic, Jammin’ – I moved the chords for this, often I’ve seen it tabbed out or played in a low position

I’ve voice led the chord so that it sounds smooth, for more on voice leading check out Guitar Practice Perfectly software – we’re going to play the same chords, B minor … but we’re going to use different voice ins, this would be ideal if you were in a band where one guy was playing in the original voice ins …

And for the 2nd guitar parts you could play the higher voice ins to add a real sense of developed theme …

The B chord is actually very easy to play …

It’s the top 3 strings at fret 7; I’m using my 1st finger to hold all those down …

Ok, now, the E 7 chord is 9 on the B, 7 on the G and 9 on the D string …

G chord uses a shape from the cage system, 8 on the B, 7 on the G and 9 on the D string …

A chord is simply that shape moved up 2 frets …

Ok, so for more on voice ins check out Guitar Practice Perfectly software

Learn How To Play … Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day

Learn how to play the intro to Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day:

Let’s look at the intro to Green Day’s “Wake Me When September Ends”, really pretty sound using chords that are, with a little practice, not too bad to play.

My 3rd finger is on the D string at fret 5 …

The G string is open to create a drone note …

Then my 1st finger is on fret 3 of the 2nd string …

Then we’re going to play through those notes …

In order, low to high, down strokes, with your plectrum, going to play them twice …

That’s played 4 times initially as the intro, then a further once as the singing starts, so effectively you’ll play that part …

That’s once, but you’re going to play that 5 times before you change anything with the left hand

When we do change the left hand, the 3rd finger note drops down 1 fret to the 4th fret, I’m going to use my 2nd finger for that as it kind of makes sense with the wya our fingers naturally line up to the fret board

Play the same note sequence …

The next chord changes to the 2nd fret of the D string and the 3rd fret of the B ..

Lift the 1st finger now so the only fretted note is the 2nd finger, play the same strings D through to B …

We can play a C bar chord now, for more on bar chords check out Guitar Practice Perfectly software, we’re going to go through the low 2 notes then come down from the B string …

Do the same with the C minor chord …

And then revert back to our original figure …

Learn How To Play … Walk This Way by Aerosmith & Run-DMC

Learn how to play the intro to Walk This Way by Aerosmith & Run-DMC:

Looking at the main riff from the Aerosmith/RUN DMC track “Walk This Way”

Ok, this is all about rhythm, the notes themselves are very close together and not too bad to play at all.  Start with the open A string and running up in consecutive frets to the 2nd fret of that string, that will create 3 notes …

Raise that 3rd finger across and grab the 2nd fret of the D to create the 4th note …

Notice I’m palm muting as well to get a really percussive sound …

We’re going to do that twice and pay careful attention to the rhythm – it change slightly, best to reference the original track …

Finishing that particular part with the lower E string open …

Then we’re going to run through those notes again …

This time we’re going to grab the lower fret of the 3rd string and pull off very quickly …

The riff itself finishes on the D string of fret 2, the 1st finger is probably the best finger to go to at that point …

Play the 1st part again …

And then we’re going to play through …

And finish with an A5 chord, open A string, 2nd fret of the D and the G string.

Learn How To Play … Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution by AC/DC

Learn how to play the classic rock intro to Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution by AC/DC:

We’re looking at Rock And Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution – the first guitar you here on that track is what we’re learning today and it uses major 3rd and minor 3rd intervals. For more on those intervals, check out Guitar Practiced Perfectly software.

The 1st interval is the open B string with the 1st finger placed on fret 1 of the G string …

I’m finger picking this intro, so I’m holding my plectrum inside my hand so when I need it, I can grab it really easily. I’m using my 1st and 2nd finger to sit on those 2 strings and then when I want to make the sound I gently pull upwards. You want to avoid a really harsh sound … unless that’s what you’re after …

That’s the 1st interval …

Then we change to the 2nd fret of both strings …

Then on the 2nd string we’re on fret 3 …

And on the 3rd string we’re on fret 4 …

Back to the 2nd fret on both strings, but this time we’re going to include the A string with it, so you can see my thumb’s on the A string …

Back to the 3rd and 4th fret of the B & D strings …

Then I’m reaching over with my 1st finger to grab the low E string at fret 3, bending it slightly sharp so it sounds bluesy …

Then I’m playing an E 5 power chord open low string …

2nd fret of the A …

And 2nd fret of the D …

Then we play through all of that again …

Finish short, back to the low E string …

Then that note again …

Finish on the E5 chord then play that E5 chord an octave higher, 7 on the A string, 9 on the D, slide down …

Ok, check out Guitar Practiced Perfectly

Learn How To Play … Message in a Bottle by The Police

Learn how to play the classic rock intro to Message in a Bottle by The Police:

Ok, i’ve just played the intro to “Message In A Bottle” by The Police. I played it intentionally slower than the original, the originals very fast.

It uses a stretched chord, I’m going to play that with my 1st, 2nd and little finger …

It starts on fret 4 of the A string …

then we play fret 6 on the D …

then fret 8 on the G …

down to the open string A, we mimic that shape but this time we’re using the open string as well as the notes so my 1st finger is on the 2nd fret of the D string, 3rd finger on the 4th fret of the G …

reform the 1st shape you played, but this time play it from the 2nd fret of the A string …

then take those notes down to the low E string …

and you’ll notice when I get to my little finger this time I slide up to create a 4th note in that path …

ok, so that’s a good one to test your fingers stretching wise & check out Guitar Practice Perfectly software

Learn How To Play … Don’t Fear the Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult

Learn how to play the classic rock intro to Don’t Fear the Reaper by Blue Öyster Cult:

Ok, we’re looking at the classic intro to Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear The Reaper”.  It starts with an A5 chord that should be played with your 1st and 2nd finger.  I’m playing this with my 1st finger on the D string at fret 2 and my 2nd finger on the G string at fret 2.

We’re going to run through those notes … in order, and then we’re actually going to just take off that 2nd finger so that the open G string creates the 4th note … did you see that there I just took off that 2nd finger  to create that open sound there …

Ok, now remember that we’re learning clusters of 4 notes and that’ll probably help you through this track with a bit more understanding of what we’re doing

So that’s 1, 2, 3, 4 …

Now we’re going to create another chord on the low 4 strings, my 2nd finger is at fret 3 on the low E and my 1st finger is on the 2nd fret of the A string, and then we’re going to play the next 2 strings open, so low string …

A string and then open D … Open G … so the next 4 notes …

The next chord shape takes the same principle of the chord we just played in that we fret 2 notes on the low E string and then play the next 2 strings open, the low E string notes are the 1st and 3rd fret …

And notice again those 2 open strings …

And then for the last chord shape we’re going to move back to the chord shape that was previous to the one we’re holding down now …  so that’s the 3rd fret on the low E string and 2nd fret on the A, next 2 strings are open, really slowly …

Learn How To Play … Black Dog by Led Zeppelin

Learn how to play the classic rock intro to Black Dog by Led Zeppelin:

Today for Guitar Practiced Perfectly we’re looking at the classic Black Dog intro by Led Zepplin

Ok, 1st note is on the A string at fret 7, play that with your 3rd finger, that’s important …

Then we’re going to climb up through the 5th, 6th and 7th fret on the D string …

Return to the 7th fret of the A string, but a good tip for playing that note is that you should probably cross over with your 2nd finger to maintain a smooth sound …

Ok, now we’re up to the G string at fret 5 …

Then we return to the D string at fret 7 …

Did you notice that slight pitch bend there on the G …

Ok …

The next 2 notes are 7 and 9 on the G …

Then we’re going to do a hammer on pull off frets 5, 7-5 on the G, back to the D string …

Twice at that 7th fret with 3rd finger …

Replay the 5th fret of the G string …

Back to the 7th fret of the D …

3 notes now on the D string, 5 7 7 ..

Ok, so 5 7 on the A …

3 5 on the A, did you see that position change? That’s important …

A string open and then an A5 power chord at the end, that’s where your 1st finger braces across the D & G string and is played along with the open A …

Learn How To Play … The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals

Learn how to play the classic rock intro to The House of the Rising Sun by The Animals:

This is Guitar Practiced Perfectly’s look at the classic House Of The Rising Sun

Ok, so we’re going to need some chords: those chords are A minor, C, D, F & E7

Each chord is treated in exactly the same way, so you’ll notice if you listen to the track that it has a really consistent sound. You need to know where the root notes are for each chord: for your A chord the root note is the 5th string (for more on root notes check out Guitar Practiced Perfectly software).

So we’re going to pick that root note as a single note …

Then with our plectrum we’re going to drop through the next 3 strings. We don’t want to really fast strum that sounds like this, we just want to control that plectrum so we get 3 individual notes …

Once we’ve played through the next available 3 notes we’re going to go to the top string and pick upwards 3 strings …

So we’ve got …

That’s all you really need to know because what we’re going to do now is those in turn to every chord …

So to A minor …

C …

D, the root note changes to the 4th string …

F, root note 4th string …

A minor, root note 5th string …

E7 the root note is on the low E string, so with that in mind, you’ve got to skip a lot further …

Ok, so that’s all you need to know to learn this classic song and check out Guitar Practiced Perfectly software
